Don’t play with food (or food words)
Posted on March 7th, 2009 View CommentsThere is very important, and not at all important stuff in life. Within the not at all category, however, there are arguably some quite important things at the top of the list. One of these is the use of lame wordplays for food and restaurant names. It may be just my personal pet peeve, while everyone else thinks its really funny. I would find that hard to believe though.
Either way, I don’t think I’m overly sensitive here. I can live with Stacks for pancakes or Flipper’s for burgers. Subway for sandwiches is fine too. Have a look at some of these jolly examples from San Francisco and surroundings though. And shiver along with me.
- Crepevine – you guessed it, a local chain of crêpe restaurants
- Citizen Cake – see the obvious connection between pastry and the film?
- Oat Cuisine – best cereal, worst name
- Sacred Grounds – a strong brew right there!
- Wok-In – would that be to stay or to go?
- All You Knead – pizzzzzzza
- Orange Julius – I hope this does at least refer to the owner’s name
I will continue to add as I run into (and away from) these puns. As moms around the world say: “Don’t play with food”. I’d like to extend that valuable lesson. Don’t play with food words either.
Note
This is of course not just a San Francisco thing. A quick search on the Interwebs indicates the wordplay evil is everywhere.
